Therapy for Life Transitions

Some major changes in life are exciting and good. Others not so much. Even with positive changes, you may experience anxiety, stress, worry, or grief. Whether you are in the midst of big or small life transitions, some changes can be difficult to traverse alone, and therapy can help support you in this process.

Anxiety is a common emotion you may experience when you are in transition -as all transitions are a form of change. You are moving from what is known to the unknown. Even if the known causes you discomfort or suffering, it can still be a process to be able to be comfortable with the shift, new habit, or pattern you have decided to move towards. It’s like crossing a threshold or a bridge to get to the other side.

Examples of life transitions or life changes:

  • Losing a job
  • Career change
  • Losing a loved one
  • Losing a pet
  • Going back to school
  • Moving or relocating
  • Aging
  • Health changes
  • Receiving a new health diagnosis
  • Transitioning from high school to college
  • Transitioning from college to working
  • Falling in love
  • Break-ups
  • Getting married
  • Having children
  • Getting divorced
  • Becoming pregnant
  • Becoming injured or hurt

“Relinquish your attachment to the known, step into the unknown, and you will step into the field of all possibilities.”

— DEEPAK CHOPRA

Being in transition is being in an “in between” state.

The liminal space is the unknown, the boundary, or the threshold which occurs in times of transition. This space can feel uncomfortable, awkward, cause anxiety, feel overwhelming, or chaotic. What I have observed, is when you are this space, your mind tends to takes over in order to figure out the fastest way to avoid losing control and becoming overwhelmed by emotions. It’s like an override switch, becoming distracted by thoughts instead of experiencing the emotions involved during this important time of transition.
