Relationship Anxiety Therapy in California, Illinois & New York
You Have the Rest of Your Life Handled. This Is the Part That Keeps Unraveling.
Individual therapy online throughout California, Illinois & New York — In-person in Ventura, CA.
You’re not someone who falls apart easily. Except, apparently, in relationships.
Relationship anxiety therapy is for the person who can manage a full inbox, hold everyone else together, and look completely fine in every room they walk into, and then completely unravel when someone they care about takes too long to text back.
You know it’s not rational. That’s the part that’s the most exhausting.
Relationship anxiety can show up whether you’re dating, partnered, newly single, or trying to understand why the same patterns keep repeating. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means something happened, and your nervous system is still responding to it, long after the situation changed.
That’s exactly what we work on.
What Relationship Anxiety Actually Looks Like
It doesn’t always look like panic. Sometimes it looks like this:
- You replay conversations for hours trying to figure out what they actually meant
- You say yes when you mean no because conflict feels like too much of a risk
- You need reassurance and feel ashamed that you need it
- You pull away right when things start to feel real
- You over-give, over-accommodate, and then quietly resent all of it
- You’re fine at work, fine with friends, and completely undone by someone you love
- You feel like too much, or not enough, depending on the day
For some people, relationship anxiety shows up as hypervigilance. Scanning every interaction for signs that something is wrong. Bracing.
For others it’s avoidance. Keeping things at arm’s length. Leaving before they can.
And for a lot of people it looks like people-pleasing, making yourself smaller, easier, less of a burden, until you’ve lost track of who you even are in the relationship.
Often it’s all three. In different combinations. Depending on the week.
Where Relationship Anxiety Usually Comes From
It rarely starts with the person you’re with now.
It starts earlier. In families where love felt conditional on how well you performed. In households where conflict was dangerous, or where your emotional needs were quietly set aside. In cultures where the expectation was clear: hold it together, don’t burden anyone, be what the family needs you to be.
For South Asian and first-generation clients, there’s a specific texture to this. You may have grown up watching relationships modeled through duty and sacrifice rather than choice. You may have internalized that needing things, really needing things, is a sign of weakness or ingratitude.
Those messages don’t disappear when you fall in love. They show up in exactly the moments when you’re trying to connect.
What Relationship Anxiety Therapy Actually Works On
Not just the relationship. What’s underneath it.
We look at the patterns you learned early, about safety, about what you have to do to make people stay. We work on building your capacity to sit with uncertainty without your nervous system treating it like a threat. And we figure out what you actually want, not just what feels safe to ask for.
I draw from somatic and nervous system work, IFS-informed therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. Which means we work with what’s happening in your body, not just what you can put into words, because a lot of relationship anxiety lives below language.
This is individual therapy. Just you. Which is often exactly where the real change happens.

Who This Is For
Relationship anxiety therapy tends to be a good fit if you:
- Overthink, over-give, or shut down in relationships, and you’re done with it
- Have the rest of your life handled but can’t seem to get this part right
- Are South Asian or first-generation and navigating relationships without much of a roadmap
- Have been told you’re “too anxious” or “too much” and have started to believe it
- Are dating, partnered, newly single, or somewhere in between, and keep running into the same wall
What It's Like to Work With Me
I’m Arati Patel, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, Illinois, and New York. I’ve been in practice since 2013.
I specialize in anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, and the relational patterns that are so well-practiced they barely feel like a choice anymore.
Sessions are honest. Sometimes uncomfortable in the way that actually moves things. You won’t leave with just something to think about, you’ll leave with something you can feel and use.
If you’re South Asian or first-generation, you won’t spend your sessions explaining your family or why “just communicate more” misses the point entirely. We can start where you actually are.

FAQs About Relationship Anxiety Therapy
Is this couples therapy?
No. Individual therapy only. We work on your patterns, your nervous system, your history, not the relationship as a whole. A lot of people find this is where the most meaningful change actually happens.
Do I need to be in a relationship to come in?
Not at all. Many clients come in while they’re dating or newly single, specifically because they want to understand their patterns before they’re in the middle of them again.
How is relationship anxiety therapy different from regular talk therapy?
We don’t just process what happened in your last argument. We work on why your nervous system responds the way it does, and build real capacity for something different. That means somatic work, parts work, and nervous system regulation alongside the insight.
Do you work with South Asian clients specifically on relationship anxiety?
Yes. The particular ways cultural background shapes relational patterns, the roles you were taught to play, the weight of family expectations, the complexity of navigating love across cultural contexts, that’s already part of how I work. You won’t need to translate any of it.
How long does relationship anxiety therapy take?
Depends on how long the patterns have been running and what’s underneath them. Most clients notice real shifts within a few months of consistent work. The goal isn’t to stop caring about your relationships. It’s to stop being run by fear inside them.
