Online Therapy in California

South Asian Therapist in California — Online Therapy Statewide

Therapy where you don't have to translate your experience. Just show up and tell the truth.

Online throughout California — In-person in Ventura, CA

California will sell you a sound bath and a cold plunge and call it recovery. You’ve probably tried both. You came back to the same exhaustion.

The problem isn’t that you’re not doing enough to take care of yourself. The problem is that your nervous system has been running on pressure for so long it doesn’t know how to come down, and no amount of optimization fixes that.

That’s the work we do here.

Who I Work With in California

California is home to a large and diverse South Asian community, concentrated in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and the Central Valley, but spread throughout the state. My California clients reflect that diversity.

Many are:

  • South Asian and first-generation professionals in tech, medicine, law, and finance
  • High-achieving adults dealing with anxiety and burnout that hides behind competence
  • Adults navigating family pressure around marriage, career, or caregiving
  • People-pleasers who’ve spent years prioritizing everyone else and are done with it
  • Anyone who has tried therapy before and found it too generic or culturally disconnected

What they share: they’re tired of carrying this much, and they’re ready for something that actually goes somewhere.

Why Working With a South Asian Therapist in California Matters

Cultural context isn’t a footnote in this work. It’s often the whole thing.

For South Asian and first-generation adults, anxiety doesn’t just come from work or relationships, it comes from a lifetime of navigating two worlds, managing family expectations, carrying the weight of what your parents sacrificed, and being the one who has to get it right for everyone.

That context shapes how anxiety shows up, how perfectionism gets wired, how people-pleasing becomes a survival strategy, and how burnout builds quietly over years before it announces itself.

Working with a therapist who already understands that world means you don’t have to start from scratch. We can get to the actual work faster.

In-Person Therapy in Ventura, CA

In addition to online therapy throughout California, I offer in-person sessions at my office in Ventura: 5450 Telegraph Rd., Suite 266, Ventura, CA 93003.

My Ventura office is accessible from Ojai, Camarillo, Oxnard, and the broader Ventura County area. Free parking is available on-site.

Many clients find that in-person sessions offer a different quality of presence and nervous system support, a space that’s just theirs, away from screens and demands. If you’re local to Ventura County and want to meet in person, that option is available.

What We Work On Together

Online therapy in California with me focuses on the patterns underneath the anxiety, not just strategies for managing the symptoms.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Understanding the cultural and intergenerational roots of your anxiety and perfectionism
  • Calming a nervous system that’s been running on pressure and obligation for years
  • Working with the inner critic, the people-pleaser, and the part of you that can never quite rest
  • Navigating family expectations, marriage pressure, and identity complexity without burning everything down
  • Building genuine confidence in your own judgment — separate from external validation
  • Figuring out what you actually want from your life, your relationships, and your work

This isn’t about leaving your culture behind. It’s about finding yourself inside of it.

About Arati Patel, LMFT

I’m Arati Patel, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, Illinois, and New York, in practice since 2013. I specialize in anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout for South Asian and high-achieving professionals, and I bring both clinical expertise and lived cultural understanding to this work.

I’m South Asian and first-generation myself. I understand the unspoken rules, the weight of intergenerational expectation, the particular loneliness of being the high-achiever who can’t afford to fall apart. That understanding shapes every session.

My approach is mindfulness-based and depth-oriented, drawing from IFS-informed therapy, nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, Buddhist and yoga psychology, and over 20 years of personal practice. I also speak Gujarati and welcome clients who want to bring their full linguistic self into the room.

Client Reflection

“Working with Arati has been life-changing. I used to feel like the weight of the world was always on me, and I was always trying to hold everything together. Through therapy, I’ve learned how to slow down, listen to my body, and finally make decisions that are true to me. I feel more calm and am confident than I have in years.”

What Changes

Therapy doesn’t make California less expensive or your family less complicated. It changes your relationship to the pressure entirely.

Clients describe things like: making a decision without running it by everyone first. Finishing the workday and actually leaving it behind. Having a hard conversation with their parents and surviving it. Feeling present with the people they love instead of distracted by everything still on the list.

Not because the external circumstances changed. Because something shifted internally, and it turns out that makes all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Therapy in California

Are you licensed to practice therapy in California?

Yes. I hold a California LMFT license (#105734) and am authorized to provide telehealth therapy to clients located anywhere in California. I also offer in-person sessions in Ventura, CA.

Do you have to be South Asian to work with you?

No. I specialize in South Asian and first-generation professionals but work with anyone who resonates with my mindfulness-based, depth-oriented approach. Many clients from all backgrounds seek this work because of its cultural attunement and nervous system focus.

Can I do both online and in-person sessions?

Yes. Some clients prefer to come in person when they’re local to Ventura and switch to online when their schedule is demanding. We can mix formats based on what works best for you.

Do you work with South Asian men?

Yes. South Asian men are often the least likely to seek therapy and the most likely to be carrying enormous pressure in silence: achievement expectations, provider roles, family duty. That’s welcome here.

What if I travel between California and your other licensed states?

Since I’m licensed in California, Illinois, and New York, I can continue seeing you if you travel or relocate between those states. You must be physically located in a state where I’m licensed at the time of each session.

Do you speak any South Asian languages?

I speak Gujarati and welcome clients who want to bring their full linguistic self into the room. Sessions are primarily conducted in English, but Gujarati is welcome when it’s the right word for what you’re trying to say.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes. Research consistently shows online therapy is equally effective for anxiety, burnout, and relational challenges when there’s a strong therapeutic connection. Many clients appreciate the flexibility and privacy of meeting from home.

How do I get started?

Schedule a free 15-minute consultation. No pressure, no commitment, just a real conversation to see if this feels like the right fit.
