About Arati Patel, LMFT

Holistic, Mindfulness-Based Therapy for
South Asian & First-Generation Adults

Hi, I’m Arati Patel (pronounced R-T), MA, LMFT.

I offer mindfulness-based, culturally attuned therapy for adults in California, Illinois, and New York, with in-person sessions available in Ventura, California.

As a first-generation South Asian American, I know what it’s like to balance ambition, family expectations, and cultural pressure. On the outside, I looked like I had it together. Inside, I wrestled with anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, and the quiet guilt of never feeling like I was doing enough.

My turning point came when I discovered mindfulness and depth-oriented therapy. I learned how to regulate my nervous system, meet myself with compassion, and weave together Western psychology with Eastern wisdom traditions like yoga and Buddhist psychology. That integration created lasting change: calm where there had been stress, rest without guilt, and alignment with my values rather than constant external expectations.

This same East-meets-West approach now shapes my work with clients who want more than coping skills. They want meaningful, sustainable change.

How I Work

Clients often tell me that therapy with a South Asian American therapist feels different. They don’t have to explain cultural guilt, family dynamics, or the pressure to succeed; we start with shared understanding and focus on real healing.

Together, we work at the root level of what’s keeping you stuck, whether that’s anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, burnout, or relationship stress. Therapy isn’t about fixing you, it’s about helping you reconnect with yourself in a way that feels grounded, honest, and supportive.

I integrate:

  • Mindfulness & self-compassion practices (MAPS, MBSR, MSC)
  • IFS-informed therapy to soften the inner critic and perfectionistic parts
  • Nervous system regulation tools for grounding and resilience
  • Yoga psychology & Buddhist psychology for depth and integration
  • Evidence-based approaches like CBT and ACT when helpful

This is not surface-level therapy. I offer depth-oriented work that honors the whole person, mind, body, and nervous system.

Who I Support

I specialize in working with:

  • High-achieving professionals in law, medicine, tech, business, entrepreneurship, and creative fields
  • South Asian and first-generation adults navigating cultural and family expectations
  • Leaders who appear confident on the outside but feel overwhelmed or disconnected inside
  • Adults struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or burnout
  • Individuals navigating dating and relationship challenges, including boundaries and over-giving

If you’re looking for therapy that understands both achievement pressure and cultural context, you’re in the right place.

A note from a client:

“When I first started therapy with Arati, I felt lost, heartbroken, and unsure how to manage my emotions. I was stuck in a relationship that wasn’t right for me and kept abandoning myself in the process. With Arati’s support, I learned how to sit with my feelings, set boundaries, and start choosing myself. As a result, I’ve created a life that feels calmer, more connected, and more true to who I am. I’ll always be grateful for how she supported me through one of the hardest chapters of my life.”

A Little More About Me

I’m a first-generation South Asian American and a lifelong student of mindfulness and contemplative practice. Before becoming a therapist, I trained and taught as a yoga and meditation teacher, roots that still shape how I support clients today.

Outside the therapy room, you’ll often find me walking, painting, or hiking the California hills, sometimes with a matcha in hand. I believe rest is not earned, it’s essential and that healing begins when we meet ourselves with honesty and compassion.

A Few Fun Facts About Me

  • I deadlift more than my body weight
  • Schitt’s Creek is my comfort show
  • I used to play competitive badminton
  • My happy place is anywhere in nature
  • Pizza is absolutely a love language
  • I geek out over mindfulness, psychology, yoga psychology, and philosophy
