About Arati Patel, LMFT

Culturally attuned, mindfulness-based therapy for South Asian & first-generation professionals

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist — California, Illinois & New York — In-person in Ventura, CA

Hi, I’m Arati

I was the good one.

The one who didn’t cause problems. The one who got good grades, made the family proud, and figured things out on her own. The one who looked completely fine, because falling apart wasn’t really an option when you’re the one everyone’s counting on.

I was also anxious basically all the time. I just didn’t have a word for it yet.

I thought it was normal to replay every conversation. I thought the constant pressure in my chest was just ambition. I thought needing to achieve more, do more, be more was just what it meant to be me.

It wasn’t. It was anxiety that had learned to dress up as productivity.

When I finally started doing my own work: nervous system regulation, mindfulness, depth-oriented therapy, Buddhist and yoga psychology, everything changed. Not because I became a different person. But because I finally stopped being at war with myself.

That’s what I help my clients do now. If any of that sounds familiar, high-functioning anxiety therapy might be a good place to start.

Therapy for High-Achieving South Asian & First-Generation Professionals

If you’re here, you’ll probably recognize yourself in this.

You’re the one who has it together: on paper, in public, in every room you walk into. You’re probably the first in your family to do what you do. You’ve worked twice as hard to get here. All while quietly carrying cultural expectations that don’t always have a name in English, navigating guilt that doesn’t make logical sense, and performing a version of yourself that’s just slightly more palatable to the world around you.

You’re competent, capable, and holding a lot. You’re exhausted in ways you can’t explain to anyone. And you’ve probably Googled “why can’t I just relax” more than once at 11pm.

I work with South Asian and first-generation professionals navigating anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout, as well as high-achieving adults who are done functioning well on the outside while quietly falling apart on the inside. I also work with Gujarati-speaking clients who want to bring their full linguistic self into the room.

If the cultural dimension is at the center of what you’re carrying, South Asian therapy goes deeper into that work.

What It’s Actually Like to Work With Me

Clients often say they feel deeply seen with me, and gently challenged in the ways they need.

I’m not here to nod along for 50 minutes. I’m here to help you actually see what’s happening beneath the surface so something can shift.

Sessions are honest and deep. Sometimes uncomfortable in the best way. You’ll leave with real insight, not just something to think about, but something you can feel in your body and use in your actual life.

My approach draws from:

  • Mindfulness and self-compassion — learning to be with what’s happening instead of fighting it
  • IFS-informed therapy (parts work) — understanding the internal voices that keep running the show
  • Nervous system regulation — because insight alone doesn’t calm a dysregulated nervous system
  • Yoga and Buddhist psychology — 20 years of personal practice woven into clinical work
  • Evidence-based approaches including CBT and ACT — practical tools alongside the deeper work

Not as a menu. Woven together based on what you actually need.

What Clients Say

“When I first started therapy with Arati, I felt lost, heartbroken, and unsure how to manage my emotions. With her support, I learned how to sit with my feelings, set limits, and start choosing myself. I’ve created a life that feels calmer, more connected, and more true to who I am. I’ll always be grateful for how she supported me through one of the hardest chapters of my life.”

A More Personal Side of Me

I think rest is a radical act for people like us. I’m still learning to practice what I preach, and I think that makes me better at this work, not worse.

Outside of therapy, you’ll find me powerlifting, hiking California hills, oil painting, rewatching Schitt’s Creek, or drinking lattes in the most giant mugs that I can find.

I’m not a blank-slate therapist. I’m a real person who gets it, and who will help you get it too.

If you've read this far and something in you went...yeah, that's me...that's usually the sign.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation. No pressure, no commitment. Just a real conversation to see if this is the right fit.
